Welcome to the Municipality of Tweed!

Back to News
Snow Plowing Update

The Municipality would like to address recent concerns regarding snowplowing and winter road maintenance that have arisen since the beginning of December.

Historically, Tweed receives an average of approximately 31 centimetres of snowfall during the month of December. This year, however, the municipality has experienced significantly higher snowfall totals, receiving approximately 68 centimetres to date. This exceptional increase has placed considerable strain on snow removal operations and available resources.

We would like to clarify that the Municipality did not cancel any snow removal contracts. The contractor currently engaged continues to provide certain services; however, they were unable to provide the same number of pieces of snow removal equipment as they have in the past.

In response to these challenges, the Municipality actively sought additional external snow removal contractors. Multiple public tenders and Requests for Quotations (RFQs) were issued; however, no bids were received through these procurement processes.

To help meet snowplowing demands, the Municipality invested in snowplow equipment for light-duty municipal trucks. This decision was made due to extremely long delivery timelines for heavy-duty snowplow trucks, allowing the Municipality to expand capacity using available vehicles.

The existing contractor continues to assist using their tractor and snowblower for snow plowing and snow removal operations. In addition, the Parks and Recreation Department has been supporting these efforts by providing additional manpower and equipment to assist with snowplowing and snow removal where possible.
The Municipality recognizes the inconvenience and challenges residents have experienced during this demanding winter season. Staff across multiple departments continue to work diligently to maintain roadways and public spaces as safely and efficiently as possible.

We appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation of our residents as we continue to respond to ongoing winter conditions.
