Blue--Green Algae Update

Recent tests have confirmed the presence of blue-green algae in Stoco Lake. These organisms thrive in warm and sunny conditions and can make the water appear bluish-green, or like green pea soup or turquoise paint. Exposure to high levels of blue-green algae and their toxins can cause severe health issues.
The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks staff attended the site on October 19th, 2023, in response to a notification regarding a possible blue green algae bloom in Stoco Lake. Final laboratory results are indicative of a blue-green algae bloom called Aphanizomenon.

We are happy to report that the latest results from samples taken from Stoco Lake were below Health Canada's Recreational Limit as well as Ontario's Drinking Water Standard Limit. However, it is important to remember that conditions can change, and blooms can increase if conditions are favorable.

To access the official lab results, please head to www.tweed.ca.

Any heath related questions or concerns should be directed to local Public Health, or a physician.
